New Delhi: Mahindra United and Derrick Pereira have officially decided to part ways after an association of four years which saw them winning almost every silverware in the nation.
Mahindra United President Alan Durante confirmed the same saying, "After four years with Mahindra United, of which the first two seasons were very good, he has decided to move on due to personal reasons."
Though the club claims to have mutually parted ways with the Goan coach, it was very much on the cards as they began their hunt for a new coach even before the I-League season came to an end and had approached Mohun Bagan’s Karim Bencherifa.
On Thursday morning, Mahindra United Director Johnny Mapgaonkar, President Alan Durante and Secretary R.Natarajan met at their Kandivali office and intimated the players of the same.
"They informed us that coach (Derrick Pereira) wouldn’t be with us for the next season. A new coach would be announced in the next few days and it’s likely he will be a foreigner," said one of the senior players.
Durante agreed with the same above and mentioned of the need to announce the new coach as soon as possible.
"We have received bio-datas of two American coaches and another English one. There’s one who has been in the support staff of Tottenham. We are looking for a foreign coach as there aren’t many good Indian coaches around. The sooner we zero in the new coach, its better as he has to select his own team," added Durante.
But how can a foreign coach who has never worked in India decide on the players?
"There are a lot of if’s and buts’. We would also like to have someone who knows the people (in India). In the coming days, these questions would be answered."
The above statement does indicate that the club could move for a foreign coach who has been plying his trade in India.
Meanwhile, assistant coach Mahesh Lotlikar is more than likely to be sent-off. Derrick Pereira shall fulfil his club commitments until the 27th of this month when Mahindra United play their last match of the Mumbai League.
