Mexico City: Doctors are fighting to save the life of Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas after one of Latin America's most prolific goal-scorers was shot in the head at a bar just before dawn on Monday.

The surgeon who operated on the 29-year-old, who had been expected to spearhead Paraguay's attack at the World Cup in June, said the player was critical but stable in a Mexico City hospital.

"We have not removed the bullet, we'd do more damage if we tried to take it out, but where it's lodged it's no longer causing any damage," Dr Ernesto Martinez told reporters.

"We can't be sure he is out of danger ... but his condition is very stable."

Mexico City's top prosecutor Miguel Angel Mancera ruled out robbery as the cause of the attack on Cabanas and said the player was in the bar with his wife.

"He has his belongings, we are ruling out ... that it was an attack to rob him," Mancera told a city radio station.

Cabanas's agent Jose Maria Gonzalez told Paraguayan radio that when the player arrived at hospital he was conscious and answered some questions.

Prolific Scorer

The striker plays for Mexican club America and was Paraguay's top scorer in World Cup qualifying with six goals.

The national team will meet champions Italy, Slovakia and New Zealand in Group F in the finals in South Africa.

The Paraguayan Football Association said it would send a representative to Mexico to monitor Cabanas's progress.

The shooting occurred in the bathroom of the bar in Mexico City, which is plagued by violent crime.
