Tung Tung Tung Sahur Explained

Who is Tung Tung Tung Sahur?

Tung Tung Tung Sahur is an AI-generated Brainrot character. Tung Tung is a baseball bat with a human face, arms, and legs, and he’s often seen carrying a second, inanimate baseball bat. According to some traditions, he can only appear during the morning meal of Sahur, although in newer memes, he appears if you call his name three times. Although Tung Tung is Indonesian, he’s considered a major character in the Italian Brainrot trend, which features cartoon-like AI characters that mix and match features from humans, animals, and inanimate objects.

What does Tung Tung Tung Sahur mean?

”Tung” mimics the sound of a drum, and “Sahur” is a morning meal. The sound refers to a Muslim tradition in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunup to sundown. They have a large meal called Sahur (or suhoor) before dawn to prepare themselves. In some communities, people walk through the streets shouting “Sahur!” while playing a two-headed drum called a bedug. This is done to wake people in time to eat sahur. The name Tung Tung Tung Sahur mimics the drum beat (tung) and shout—”Tung, tung, tung, ‘Sahur!’”

Origin and Spread of Tung Tung Tung Sahur

The first image of Tung Tung appeared in late February 2025. TikTok user @noxaasht posted a video featuring the newly-created Tung Tung Tung Sahur character. The video showed a static picture of Tung Tung, although there were added effects like fiery screen dissolves and a close-up of Tung Tung’s feet. A voiceover in Indonesian accompanies the video, encouraging viewers to wake up early enough to eat Sahur (or else Tung Tung might appear). Translated into English, the voiceover says: “Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Sahur. Scary anomaly that only comes out at Sahur. It is said that if someone is called for Sahur three times and does not answer, then this creature comes to your house. It's very scary. Tung tung usually makes a sound like a gong. Share it with your friends who have trouble eating Sahur.” The original Tung Tung video exploded in popularity and currently has over 6.3 million likes on TikTok.

Other users soon started making their own Tung Tung videos. Less than two weeks after @noxaasht’s video was posted, TikToker @redbluzx_tiktoq posted a second Tung Tung video. This one showed Tung Tung swinging his bat and running. At the end of the video, he explodes. This video was also extremely popular, currently boasting nearly 500,000 likes. TikToker @drw.artz posted a Tung Tung Tung Sahur drawing tutorial video set to the original voiceover that racked up over 300K TikTok likes. Tung Tung won third place in Know Your Meme’s “Meme of the Month” for April 2025. In late March 2025, as Ramadan drew to a close, some Indonesian users posted farewell videos indicating that Tung Tung was leaving the area (often on a rocketship) as he would no longer be needed to wake people for Sahur. (That may be around the time sightings began in the U.S.) Videos showing Tung Tung appearing in real life (like this one, this one, or this one) are also extremely popular.

Tung Tung has also appeared in songs and video games. The catchy “Tung Tung Sahur Funk” by YouTuber TheGoodVibe racked up nearly 100k views in less than two weeks.
