- Mewtwo, Shadow Mewtwo, and Armored Mewtwo are currently unavailable in Pokemon GO but may come back later.
- You can only catch Mewtwo with Premier Balls you get for defeating it in a 5-Star Raid battle.
- Use Golden Razz Berries to increase your chance of catching Mewtwo after defeating it in a raid.
Catching Regular and Shiny Mewtwo
Mewtwo and Shiny Mewtwo can be caught in 5-Star Raid battles. Mewtwo cannot be found normally in the wild and must be caught by battling them in a raid battle. Unfortunately, Mewtwo is not always available in raids. The last time Mewtwo was in 5-Star Raid battles was summer of 2022. In order to raid, you'll need to be at least Trainer level 5 in Pokemon GO and have a Raid Pass. Raid Passes can be acquired by spinning the photo disc at a Gym.
You'll need Premier Balls to catch Mewtwo. You can get Premier Balls by defeating a raid boss. These Pokeballs are given specifically to catch the raid boss and any Premier Balls left after capturing are discarded. Stock up on Golden Razz Berries before fighting Mewtwo to increase your chance of capturing by x2.5. You can get Golden Razz Berries from winning raid battles, completing field research, or spinning a PokeStop that an Ultra Buddy has identified as interesting.
Finding a Shiny Mewtwo happens by chance. Like in the mainline Pokemon games, finding a shiny Pokemon is based on luck. Shiny Mewtwo doesn't have better stats than regular Mewtwo, but since shiny Pokemon have a very low spawn rate, they are sought after. Shiny Legendaries in raids are a guaranteed catch, so use Pinap or Silver Pinap Berries to get more candy for your Mewtwo.
Catching Shadow Mewtwo
Just like regular Mewtwo, Shadow Mewtwo is not always available. Shadow Mewtwo is available in specific events, most recently the Rising Shadows event in May 2023. In the past, you could get Shadow Mewtwo by completing field research and defeating Giovanni, but in the Rising Shadows event, Shadow Mewtwo was a 5-Star Raid boss.
Shadow Mewtwo has a shiny version as well. Just like other shinies, finding this one is all about luck. You will have to keep battling Shadow Mewtwo to find a shiny version.
Catching Armored Mewtwo
Armored Mewtwo was available during a promotional event in 2020. This Legendary was available to promote Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, and has not been in the game since.
Can you trade Mewtwo?
Yes, Mewtwo can be traded. As there is currently no way to catch a Mewtwo in-game, trainers may be tempted to trade to get it. You can trade Mewtwo but the Stardust requirement is very high. Good Friends can trade Mewtwo for 20,000 Stardust if the Trainer has registered a Mewtwo before and 1,000,000 Stardust if they've never owned one before. Great Friends can trade Mewtwo for 16,000 Stardust if the Trainer has registered a Mewtwo before and 800,000 Stardust if they've never owned a Mewtwo. Ultra Friends can trade Mewtwo for 1,600 Stardust if the Trainer has registered a Mewtwo before and 80,000 Stardust if they've never owned one. Best Friends can trade Mewtwo for 800 Stardust if the Trainer has registered a Mewtwo before and 40,000 Stardust if they've never owned a Mewtwo.
Trading has a few stipulations. You must be friends with the owner of the Mewtwo, you must be level 10 or higher, and you must be within 100 meters of one another to complete the trade. Legendaries are considered Special Trades, which can only be completed once daily.
