How to Make a Knotted Ribbon Necklace
A knotted ribbon necklace is an easy craft project that produces a lovely piece of jewelry. There are various ways of producing a knotted ribbon necklace, including using just the ribbon, using a variety of ribbons or interweaving beads with the ribbon. A selection of possibilities is given in this tutorial, to allow you to choose the one that fits your interests best.
Steps

Simple knotted ribbon necklace

Choose suitable ribbon. This necklace will work well with most types of ribbon, except for fabrics that won't hold a knot in place well. Narrow ribbon will produce small and indistinct knots, while wider ribbon will produce larger, more distinctive knots.

Measure the ribbon. You'll need the length that you want the ribbon to sit around your neck, plus half that length again, to allow space for making the knots.

Lay the piece of ribbon out flat on a work surface.

Make a knot in the ribbon at one end. Don't pull it tightly though.

Make another knot in the ribbon. Again, don't pull if you are going to make more knots.

Repeat the knot process until you run out of ribbon or have sufficient knots in the length.

Pull tightly to firm up the knots.

Finished. Decorate with additional elements if wished; for example, you might like to use little ribbon bows (glue or stitch these in place).

Multi-knotted ribbon necklace

Choose a bundle of ribbons for making into a necklace. The colors and patterns can be random and eclectic, or you can be very careful and match colors according to a pattern or theme, such as varying shades of purple or green, or rainbow hues, or ribbons with spots, etc. You'll need quite a few ribbons, but the exact amount will depend on how bulky you'd like the final necklace to appear. The ribbons can be in all sorts of lengths, as you'll be knotting them together to create the desired lengths. One thing that is important is that you must be prepared to cut the ribbons used, in order to ensure a nice mix of different ribbon lengths.

Decide on the length for the necklace. This will determine how long each knotted ribbon length will need to be. To work out the length, get a piece of string and hold it around your neck. Stand in front of the mirror and keep moving the string length until it is of the length you desire, then this string forms your length template. Just be sure to add a small amount extra for making the end loop when the lengths are joined together.

Start knotting lengths of ribbon together. Choose differing lengths and colors or patterns of ribbon and begin knotting them together to make the length that you've chosen for the necklace.

Continue making as many lengths as you would like to form the necklace. It's recommended that you make at least five lengths, so that there are enough lengths for the necklace to look interesting. You can have many more lengths, as wished.

When you've made enough lengths, draw them together, end to end. At one end, tie in a neat loop and knot, joining the ends together permanently. On the other end, stitch a large button to the other end, layered one on top of the other. The stitches will keep this end intact. The button must be large enough to not fall back through the loop but not so large that it doesn't fit through the loop with a bit of a push.

Wear. To wear, bring the necklace together around your neck and put the button through the loop to hold it in place.

Knots and beads ribbon necklace

Choose some grosgrain ribbon. Pick a color you like, and one that matches the beads you'll be using.

Measure the length of the necklace. Once you have this length, double it, to account for the knots that you're about to make. Then cut the ribbon to size. To work out the length, get a piece of string and hold it around your neck. Stand in front of the mirror and keep moving the string length until it is of the length you desire, then this string forms your length template.

Choose the beads. These can of any size, but always be sure to match large beads with wide length ribbon and smaller beads with narrower ribbon.

Thread the first bead into place. Take it to the center of the ribbon, then knot each side of the ribbon to keep it in place.

Add the next bead to one side of the bead already in place. Knot in place.

Add the next bead to the other side of the center bead. Knot in place.

Continue with as many beads as you'd like to add. You might add only five very large beads, leaving a lot of ribbon for the rest of the necklace, or you might add a whole long row of smaller beads, leaving less ribbon on the necklace.

Finish the ends of the necklace. You can simply knot the end together, or attach a clasp (such as a lobster claw clasp) or a button and buttonhole in the ribbon. Be sure to adjust the necklace to the length you want it before adding the final fittings. If, for any reason, you find the ribbon has become too short, add some wide elastic to lengthen the necklace and stitch in place. If you do this, there is no need to attach a fitting, as the necklace will stretch over your head.

What's your reaction?
