Fourteen Sri Lankan fishermen, arrested by the Coast Guard on the charge of illegally fishing in Indian waters, were remanded to judicial custody till June 4 by a court near Ramanathapuram on Thursday.
According to officials, the fishermen were produced before the Judicial Magistrate at Paramakudi and remanded to judicial custody till June 4. The fishermen from Neerozhumbu were arrested on Wednesday and their three boats were also seized.
They were handed over to the Coastal Security Group, who produced them in the court on Thursday. Sixty four Sri Lankan fishermen have been arrested so far this year and all of them have been booked under Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act 1981.
