18 convicts now have computer degrees

SALEM: Showing a flair for acquiring new knowledge, 18 convicts, sentenced to life imprisonment, at the Salem Central Prison have come out in flying colours in computer courses. Nearly 26 prisoners, most of them life convicts, were offered Diploma courses in desk top publishing and computer applications under the Mahatma Gandhi Community College Course.A batch of convicts received their diplomas on Tuesday in a low key ceremony held at the prison. According to Superintendent of Salem Central Prison Parameswaran, out of the 18 successful candidates, two scored above 80 per cent and the rest secured first class. A small computer lab has been set up inside the prison for the community college courses, the prison staff said.
