CHENNAI: In a bid to resolve the tension along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border following incidents of violence over the Mullaiperiyar dam issue, additional police forces had been deployed, said K Ramanujam, Director General of Police, Tamilnadu, on Saturday.Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Human Rights Day celebrations at the State Human Rights Commission, the DGP said that 500 police personnel had been deployed along with six companies of special police to further strengthen the Tamilnadu-Kerala border. The 500 police personnel would include an Inspector General of Police, a deputy Inspector General of Police and four superintendents of police.He also said that a special control room was set up in Kudaloor for people to complain on any violence in their area. The DGP said that traffic in Kumili, Kumbam and Bodinayakanur had been affected due to blockage of roads by protestors and that Sabarimala devotees could not reach Kerala through Kumbam or Kumili. They were being diverted through Sengottai to reach the shrine and were provided security, he said, adding that steps for smooth flow of traffic were being taken with the help of the public.The state police had held talks with the Kerala chief secretary Prabhakaran, DGP Jacob and ADGP Intelligence Hemachandran in connection with the safety of the Sabarimala pilgrims and that the Kerala officials had assured security for the pilgrims from Tamil Nadu.Fifty persons had been held so far in connection with the attacks on shops run by Keralites and security had also been given to shops, the DGP said.
