Committed action with untiring determination plays the pivotal role in the growth of a nation. The astonishing transformation of the coral islands of Lakshadweep from scratches was no exception.
'Breaking the Waves' is the autobiography of an official who has meaningfully spent over 32 years of his life for the development of the island and the welfare of the islanders. Most part of the life of George Varghese, the author of 'Breaking the Waves' is intertwined with the life of Lakshadweep as most of the developmental activities were launched by the administration when he was holding a key post in the Administration. The islands in the Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast had once remained isolated for a major part of the year with very little surface communication facilities. The supervision and inspection of the problems being faced by people in their daytoday life then was few and far between around six decades ago.

The fate of the islands took a turn for the better after these islands were granted the status of Union Territory in 1956.

Menacingly surging waves, dangerously blowing storms and the fury of the monsoon were some of the challenges which the author had survived for over three decades on the islands. As the pioneer of several projects, the author had watched Lakshadweep life from close quarters.

The author, who is now living at Valukalayil, Crash Road, Thrikkakara, Kochi, also puts under scanner the vast opportunities for tapping the tourism potential of the islands.
