BANGALORE: Removing the veil behind the appointment of Neelam Achutha Rao as the new Director General and Inspector General (DG IGP) of state police, Home minister R Ashok informed that the state government was left with only two options to appoint the next candidate, after the removal of incumbent S T Ramesh's name from the list of three candidates originally sent by the government.
Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, Ashok dismissed reports that state Chief Secretary had sent only two names Achutha Rao and D V Guruprasad to UPSC to make customary recommendations to the government. Outlining on the decision, the minister informed that Guruprasad's candidature was overlooked as he is only 25 days away from superannuating, as against Rao who is scheduled to retire from service in November this year.He said that the UPSC had deleted Ramesh's name, who was earlier appointed as the adhoc DG in January 2011 by the state government, on technical grounds.
Rao, who took charge on Wednesday morning, met the home minister and exchanged pleasantries. Ramesh was asked to take charge as the new IG DGP following former DGP Ajai Kumar Singh's retirement, when the then Bangalore City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari, one of the aspirants for the top post, sought direction from CAT to include his name in the list to be sent to UPSC for recommendations. The decks were cleared to appoint the new DG when the CAT quashed Bidari's plea.Ramesh, meanwhile, was reportedly contemplating to approach the Supreme Court against the injustice meted out to him by the UPSC which had deleted his name from the threename empanelled list sent by the state government.A day after he was relieved from the responsibility of DG IGP (incharge), the state government on Wednesday appointed S T Ramesh as DGP CID with immediate effect. Ramesh was posted to CID after the government decided to appoint Neelam Achuta Rao as the fullfledged DG IGP, the charge he took over on Tuesday.
