TIRUCHY: At a marriage function here, advertisements showed the DMK symbol — the rising sun — and the names of M Karunanidhi and M K Stalin on both sides. Party cadre as well as the public were surprised, as it is something novel for a party known to follow strict hierarchy in everything, including banners and invitations. The portraits of the two leaders too were equal in prominence and size in all the advertisements and posters. This is the first time in the DMK that MK sees another leader being treated equal to him.One of the advertisements hailed Stalin as ‘Thamizhina Thalapathi’ (general of the Tamil race) while promoting Karunanidhi to a new title of ‘Dravida Perunthalaivar’ (great Dravidian leader), in what is seen as a bid to push the old leader upstairs as simply a figurehead. During DMK’s last general council meeting, MK had challenged Stalin’s supporters to face a contest against him for the leadership post. K N Nehru has obviously used the wedding of his son K N Arun to display his loyalty to Stalin, besides turning it into a show of strength for the party treasurer. The name of Union Minister M K Alagiri appeared only in a few posters — that too below Stalin. Alagiri skipped the wedding. DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan also did not attend th wedding.
