New Delhi: The countdown for the 2006 FIFA World Cup begins at the German city of Leipzig on Friday night where the main draw for the Finals will take place.
Around 80 thousand people swept through the city in a carnival atmosphere with many joining hands with Leipzig residents to form a human chain to welcome the national and foreign delegations to their city.
A 2.2 kilometre red carpet has been laid form the center of the city to the new stadium.
Leipzig is the only city which was part of former East Germany that will host a world cup game.
The draw will divide the 32 finalists into eight groups for the group stage matches.
Football legend, Pele, in Leipzig for the draw, hoped that the Saqmba kings, Brazil, will get a favorable group.
"To the draw tomorrow, I wish I have the same luck I had when I did the draw in Korea, because I set it up good for Brazil when I did that."
"I wish to have the same luck here, to get the good teams for Brazil to prepare for the first round," said Pele.
Around 350 million people are expected to watch the draw live on the television.
