CHENNAI: It’s not just in the real world that Anna Hazare has scored a win. If the popularity of the online game— ‘Angry Anna’, inspired by the popular Iphone game from Rovio, is any indication, he seems to have scored over politicians even in the virtual world. The game, Angry Anna, seems to have caught the fancy of gaming enthusiasts not merely in Chennai, but all over the country. Consider this for a minute, the game got a monstrous 35,000 hits within the first 24 hours of being made available on the Internet. Presently, it has a phenomenal 4,70,000 hits clearly indicating its rise in popularity. Created by Noida-based application developers, Geek Mentors, the game is hosted by the American-based gaming website, Gamesalad. The objective of the game is simple. Players catapult characters such as Anna Hazare, Baba Ramdev and Kiran Bedi (in her trademark cap, of course) to bring down politicians. “We wanted to support Anna by being a part of the protest, but work came in the way, so we decided to do what we do best and developed a game,” says Mohd Shah Nawaz, one of the co-founders of Geek Mentors, with Mohd Faisal. User reviews have indicated that the game does have a few glitches but then, that doesn’t seem to have stopped gaming enthusiasts from playing it.“Angry Anna, while a bit sluggish, manages to incorporate both the charm and uniqueness of its inspiration, Angry Birds,” says Anuj Srivas, a gaming aficionado.Anna supporters in the city too seem to have given the game a thumbs up. “I think it is unnecessary, but if it helps people become aware of corrupt politicians, I think it is a good initiative,” says N L Shrinivasan, who has been actively involved in protests across the city. The game has four levels, the last one being the most difficult to complete. If a player fails to collapse the politicians in the last level, one spots a pop up message, “Anna can’t do this alone, do you support Anna against corruption?” that flashes across the screen. If ‘no’ is chosen, the same level reloads again. However, if the player chooses ‘yes’, a different level, where it is programmed to automatically collapse all the politicians, gets loaded. The final message reads, “MISSION COMPLETE”. If only it were this simple!
