New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued contempt notices to the Chief of Army staff and the defence secretary over issues connected with the implementation of the Fifth Pay Commission report.
The court observed that the government had differentiated between people who had retired before 1996 and those who were to retire after.
The Supreme Court held this was wrong and had given three months time to rectify the error.
The development is likely to be lapped up by the BJP, which had announced a slew of benefits for the armed forced in its manifesto and committed to revisiting pending issues of pay and privileges.
Besides, "the modalities for setting up a separate pay commission for the forces will be expedited, all personnel of the army, air force and navy, as also paramilitary forces, will be exempted from paying income tax on their salaries and perquisites,” the manifesto read.
