THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Friday’s attack on Vilappilsala-bound garbage lorries by an unidentified gang is being viewed as an attempt to subvert the ongoing people’s struggle to get the controversial garbage processing plant closed. Two lorries laden with garbage were stoned at Oottukuzhi near Vilappilsala on Friday night and so far the culprits have not been apprehended. But the incident has sparked off a row with the ‘Janakeeya Samithi’ spearheading the struggle alleging a conspiracy to scuttle the campaign. The Corporation Council has condemned the attack and has requested the intervention of the Chief Minister. Besides, the attack has appeared to be too pat, coming just three days after a meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy which gave the government and the Corporation a breather of three more months to hammer out a final solution. ‘’Such attacks will create problems for the monitoring committee formed by the government with Corporation-panchayat-Janakeeya Samithi members to find a lasting solution to the garbage problem,’’ a meeting of the Janakeeya Samithi has pointed out. ‘’In fact, the monitoring committee meeting held on Friday morning under the supervision of the LSG Principal Secretary had decided to take steps on a war-footing to establish mini plants across the city. The attack has only proved that certain vested interests are agitated over this move which would lead to the closure of the Vilappilsala plant,’’ G R Subhash of the Samithi said. Saturday’s meeting of the Janakeeya Samithi held on Saturday also pointed out that such attacks had been carried out earlier too to subvert the struggle, and demanded that the police should apprehend the culprits at the earliest. ‘CM SHOULD INTERVENE’: Meanwhile, the Corporation Council, which flayed the attack on the lorries, demanded the immediate intervention of the Chief Minister in the incident. The attack was also in gross violation of the agreement reached at the meeting convened by the Chief Minister, it said.
