If you spotted a couple of persons somewhere near the Valluvar Kottam signal ambushing motorists who weren’t wearing helmets on Tuesday, then chances are that you might have run into radio jockeys (RJs) from BIG FM, doing their bit to increase awareness about unsafe driving. This was Phase One of the radio station’s four-phase Total Quartz Safety Month, conducted in collaboration with Total Oil India Pvt. Ltd and ALERT, an NGO that teaches emergency response techniques. It ends with a ‘safety run’ on November 4 on the Marina Beach.
The campaign, led by the RJs is aimed at advocating and initiating a change in the mindset of people when it comes to following road safety rules. “We are concentrating on making people realise that this is not advice but a simple initiative. The aim is to make others on the road conscious about the rules they’re not following when they see you do it,” said RJ Ophelia.
Phases two, three and four of the campaign will involve creating awareness about drunken driving, not using the cellphone while driving and rash driving, respectively. RJs and popular celebrities will lend their voices on air to support the campaign.
Actor Shantanu Bhagyaraj, who launched the initiative, narrated incidents about traffic accidents from his lives and pledged to follow road safety rules along with the RJs present.
A track with actor Vivekh’s voice that urges the public to follow roads safety rules, which will be played on the radio station, was also unveiled on the occasion.
