PARADIP: A 14-year-old boy drowned in the  Mahanadi at Kanimul under Tirtol police limits on Saturday. Kalindi Das, a student of Baya Abdut High School at Kanimul, drowned in the river while participating in the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony. Though his friends tried to rescue him, he drowned due to the high water level in the river following heavy rains. Receiving information, villagers rushed to the spot but could manage to fish out the body only in the evening.The villagers later gheraoed the high school accusing the teachers of not being present during the immersion ceremony. Demanding compensation for the family of the deceased boy, they alleged that due to lack of supervision by the teachers, Kalindi drowned.  The agitators were pacified after IIC Debdatta Kar intervened.Tension over ClashTension prevailed at Jamugaon panchayat under Nuagaon police limits after the clash between two groups of people over a dispute at the palli sabha meeting on Saturday. Five persons, including three women, were seriously injured in the clash. Police have been deployed in the village as a precaution. Sources said the Sarpanch of Jamugaon panchayat, in violation of the Panchayat manual, conducted the palli sabha in the panchayat office. As per norms, the meeting should be organised at a common place in the village so that villagers of two or three wards can participate in the meeting. This led to heated exchanges between a faction of people supporting the Sarpanch and another group of villagers. This led to   a clash in which, five persons were injured. One of the injured persons is ward member Satyanarayan Rout. All of them have been admitted to Nuagaon Hospital.  Police have registered four cases but no arrests have been made till now.Burglars ArrestedSix burglars were arrested on Sunday from  BPL colony of Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL) and cash and stolen articles like mobile phone sets and gold jewellery seized from their possession. On a tip off, police raided the BPL colony and made the arrests. They have been identified as Susant Mallick, Biswajit Swain, Manoranjan Bhoi, Rashmiranjan Senpati, Bhabgrahi Mallick and Babuli Swain. Police said while some of the burglars are relatives of PPL employees, Bhabgrahi is an unemployed software engineer and brain behind the burglaries. They have been produced in court.
