New Delhi: Vital organs of a brain-dead girl were transplanted into patients by doctors in at a Hyderabad hospital. It all started when 20-year-old G Shailaja was admitted at Kamineni Super Speciality Hospital in a comatose state.

Medical reports revealed the girl had suffered massive brain hemorrhage and she was declared brain-dead.

Having realised that their daughter would not return despite all medical help the girl's parents and her relatives came forward to donate her organs when they were informed that they could help several others.

Within a short span a team of doctors, consisting of neprhologist T K Saha, transplated Shailaja's kidney to one Rohit Kumar who was suffering from end-stage organ failure and was on dialysis at Kamineni Hospital.

Besides, her other kideny and liver were transplanted to patients at two other centres, while her eyes were donated to the eye bank.

Addressing mediapersons later, transplant co-ordinator B S Subramaniam said this was perhaps the first such case in South India.

Saha said more than 1.20 lakh people suffer from end stage kidney failure every year. Majority of them do not undergo organ transplantation due to lack of donors.
