Judging by his smile and open demeanor, one would have difficulty in imagining that nine-year-old Suhail Khan just underwent an exhaustive, 10-hour corrective surgery to correct his facial deformity. Extremely confident, Suhail walks into an easy but firm handshake with his doctor, Balaji, and settles into his chair and lets his doctor do the talking, at a press conference here recently.
Even when badgered for photographs after the conference, Suhail’s open nature does not change as he comfortably poses for pictures and smiles contentedly.
For his parents Liyas and Pnoreaftav Khan, his surgery is a huge relief. “We used to be so scared that he might hit his head somewhere. We had mattresses all over the house so he would not injure himself accidentally. He even started school later than usual. All our prayers have been paid off,” his mother fervently said.
Liyas describes Suhail as a quiet child. “We’d leave him to his own devices and he would never bother us. He used to be so diffident because of his deformity. He’s slowly starting to change,” he says.
One of the first demands by Suhail after the surgery was chicken roti, his favourite dish, according to one of his doctors. He wants to go cycling, too. “I couldn’t ride a bicycle earlier because I could not see properly. Now that I can see, I would love to go cycling!” beamed Suhail.
He also has other activities planned.
A back-bencher at heart, he said he’s aiming straight for the last row next time he goes to school. And he is also ready for his next surgery. “There is still more surgery required for his nose. He was the one who volunteered to undergo this surgery. No crying, no fuss. He’s a brave warrior,” said his doctor with a fist pump.
