Khairlanji (Maharasthra): Accusing Maharashtra police of probing in a "prejudiced manner" the massacre of four members of a Dalit family in Bhandara district, CPI(M) on Thursday demanded a probe a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident.
The demand was made by CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat who visited the village and consoled Bhaiyalalji Bhotmange, the lone survivor of the September massacre that has sparked violent protets by Dalits in Eastern Maharasthra.
She went to his home and immediately took up the case with the Prime Minister's Office and the Union Home Minister.
Karat, whose party is providing crucial outside support to the Manmohan Singh Government, alleged the entire investigation by the local police was "carried out in a prejudiced manner".
Karat, who is also a Member of Parliament, spoke to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil from the village and apprised him of "ground realities" in this remote area in Vidarbha and requested him to order a CBI inquiry.
She charged the probe to be conducted by Maharashtra CID will be "useless" as during the preliminary investigation vital evidences have been deliberately destroyed to protect the perpretrators of the crime.
Karat, who also spoke to the PMO to seek an appointment with the Prime Minsiter, has accused the local police of protecting the criminals involved in the killing.
