Sarah Brown writes about the battle of breakfasts in her memoirs.

London: Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was billed for 200 breakfasts on the day he left 10 Downing Street, according to local media reports.

In what came to be known as the "Battle of the Breakfasts", a refusal by Sarah Brown to cater morning snacks for her hubby when he was in his Downing Street study left the couple with the "expensive bill", 'The Scotsman' reported.

Ahead of the publication of her memoirs, 'Behind the Black Door' on life at Number 10, Sarah said, "Gordon used to start work very early and one morning I got a call from his office saying 'Gordon has been down for an hour now. Have you got his breakfast ready?' I said no, I certainly did not."

"He was at work! If he was up here, fine, he could have breakfast, but when he was at work he was on his own. There's a pause, then I was told, 'Oh don't worry, we'll sort something else out'. I thought 'too right' and that was that," she elaborated.

However, on departure they were presented with a bill for 200 breakfasts: "We were charged for every rasher of bacon he'd ever had."

Sarah Brown, whose book is slated to be published next month, also spoke of her frustration surrounding her husband's public image that did not match that of the "hard-working, fun, smart, decent man" she married.

"When I look back on it, maybe the one thing I would have changed about my role is that I would have spoken up more. When things are going wrong and I was reading stories about him that simply were not true, I wonder whether I should have got more involved."
