Cape Town: After VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, it's now the turn of Sourav Ganguly to be sacked as captain in the Indian Premier League.
Ganguly became the latest casualty of the purge on Friday as he was removed as skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders. Coach John Buchanan's experiment with multiple captaincy seems to be on track.
Ganguly will remain Kolkata's icon player but will not be their captain, or only captain.
The captaincy will go first to Brendon McCullum, then to Chris Gayle for a couple of games and may be even to Ganguly for a bit and even perhaps to the little known all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla.
"We will pick a team and then the captains. There could be three to four captains," Buchanan had said in a press conference in Kolkata where he introduced his theory of multiple-captains.
This is not the first time Ganguly has been unseated with the Greg Chappell era almost ending the Bengal player's career. But Ganguly fought hard to find a way back but this time at 37, retired from international cricket, does he have the desire for a battle?
He sounded like he did when he told CNN-IBN: "Even I can ask for four coaches or ten coaches. Tomorrow Shah Rukh (Khan) can get up and ask for three more owners. These are all theories and we have to see what ultimately works for the team."
The onus now is firmly on the shoulders of Buchanan; his theory has won the endorsement of the team boss, although the players weren't too sure till recently.
"I think there should be just one captain. I don't know how having four captains will work," said Knight Riders pacer Ishant Sharma.
Only time will tell who will win the battle in the Knight Riders camp. As the cliche goes, 'the proof of the pudding, is in the eating.'
