BHUBANESWAR: Better roads, decorated roadsides, gardens that have been redone are all the benefits of the 99th Indian Science Congress (ISC) being organised in the city. The Public Works Department (PWD) is seriously engaged in renovation work, keeping in mind the Prime Minister and numerous delegates visiting the city during the ISC. The PWD is expediting its annual repair work. The budget for this is around Rs 40 crore. The expenditure for the stretch of road being repaired from Master Canteen till Vani Vihar is ` 2 crore. PWD chief engineer Bijan Behera is hopeful that the work for this stretch will be completed before the PM’s visit. Even though no special budget provision was made for this purpose, all the repair work taking place across the city is a part of the annual repair plan of the PWD. Both sides of the road and the medians are being repaired and re-painted. The road- dividers are being renovated. When asked about the places where the repair work is not being done properly, Behera replied, “I have stopped the paint work at numerous places and asked them to resume painting only after the repair work was completed.” The repair work involves redoing the crumbled or broken dividers. The stretches from Jaidev Vihar till KIIT university and Master Canteen till Vani Vihar will be decorated and redone. This is being done for the delegates and scientists who will travel through the city during the ISC session. The roads will be painted and traffic signage placed wherever required. The PWD is trying to fast track its work at numerous places where the roads have been dug up for various reasons. They will try to complete the work and fill them up. Also the barricades near the Vani Vihar square will be removed temporarily to widen the roads. But the barricades at Rajmahal construction site cannot be removed. “We will be spraying water at least twice a day to minimise the dust pollution at the square,” said Behera. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) are cleaning up the city and redoing the gardens. Orders are already in place to make the city garbage-free. The major routes that the PM might traverse and the delegates visit have been already spruced up to a large extent.
