Cauvery Crisis Back, Karnataka farmers oppose release of water to Tamil Nadu
Farmers in the Cauvery-fed areas around Mysore have been holding protests the last 3/ 4 days, saying that there is no way water can be release to neighbouring Tamil Nadu, if they have to save their crops till December.

Bengaluru: With continuing drought across Karnataka, the Cauvery inter-state water sharing deepens into a crisis with farmers in Mysore staging protests against water being released from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.

Farmers' groups held a protest near the Kabini dam in Mysore on Friday afternoon, against the government's release of Cauvery river water. About 200 farmers congregated at the dam and tried to close the gates of the dam entry, but were later taken away by local police into preventive custody.

Farmers in the Cauvery-fed areas around Mysore have been holding protests the last 3/ 4 days, saying that there is no way water can be release to neighbouring Tamil Nadu, if they have to save their crops till December. As it is, reservoirs are not full this drought season and there is already a 40 per cent short supply to meet domestic needs.

Besides, drinking water needs of Bengaluru and Mysore are also being met. though the government had promised to not let out any more water to Tamil Nadu, farmers allege that water is released at night, putting local farmers in distress.

After many years the Cauvery crisis has returned to put both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on the edge. This season, Karnataka has witnessed the worst Monsoon in the last 30 years.
