Chennai Open: Vasek Pospisil beats Kyle Edmund to enter 2nd round
Pospisil beat wild-card entry Kyle Edmund of Britain 6-3, 7-5 to reach the second round of the Chennai Open.

Fifth-seeded Vasek Pospisil of Canada beat wild-card entry Kyle Edmund of Britain 6-3, 7-5 Monday to reach the second round of the Chennai Open.

The 23-year-old Pospisil saved all four break points he faced and converted two of the ones he created to wrap up the win in 81 minutes.

The lanky Pospisil, who missed several tournaments in early 2013 because of glandular fever but still climbed to a career-best ranking of 32nd by the end of the season, took a 3-0 lead before wrapping up the first set. Edmund led 5-4 in the second, but the 376th-ranked player made a number of unforced errors and couldn't force a decider.

In fact, none of the four first-round matches Monday went to three sets, as Dudi Sela of Israel won 6-4, 6-2 against Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic beat local wild-card entry Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 7-5, 6-2 and Taiwanese player Lu Yen-Hsun ousted Tim Smyczek of the United States 6-4, 6-2.

Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka is among four players to get a bye into the second round. Defending champion Janko Tipsarevic missed the tournament because of a heel injury.

The tournament also sees the return of India's Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi as a doubles pair after three years.
