CHENNAI: The Chief Minister on Wednesday announced that a memorial would be built in honour of freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai, at Sangagiri, where he was hanged by the Britishers.The CM’s announcement follows the request made by AIADMK member Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy on March 30. In a statement in the Assembly, the CM said work on building the memorial would start at the earliest. Chinnamalai was arrested by the British and taken to Sangagiri where they hanged him to death. Jayalalithaa said during the regime of former Chief Minister MG Ramchandran, a State-owned transport corporation was named after Chinnamalai. Later, during her tenure as the CM, she had donated `1 lakh to instal a bronze statue of Chinnnamalai on Anna Road.She also ordered to observe the 18th day of Tamil month Aadi as memorial day of Chinnamalai in Vodanilai in Erode district.
