New Delhi: O Ibobi Singh is likely to take oath on Thursday as Manipur Chief Minister for a second term as a Congress-led coalition government headed by him is all set to assume power in the hill state.
The Congress, which fell just one short of a majority in the 60-member Assembly, said it would form the government with the help of the RJD and CPI.
Ibobi Singh met Governor SS Sidhu on Wednesday evening and staked claim to form government after the Congress bagged 29 seats in the Assembly elections.
RJD has bagged three seats and CPI four. Emerging from the half-an-hour meeting, Ibobi Singh said he would take the support of RJD, one of whose representatives would be inducted into the ministry, and CPI.
It was not immediately clear whether CPI, which had been a part of outgoing Congress-led government, also headed by Singh, would join the new dispensation. Indications are that the new ministry would be sworn in on Thursday morning itself.
Earlier in the day, Ibobi Singh was unanimously elected the leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP). He had told reporters after the CLP meeting that the Congress would go with only those parties alliance with which are approved by the high command.
CPI sources said the party would take a decision in a few days on whether to join the government or support it from outside.
Announcing the election of Ibobi Singh as CLP leader, PCC chief Gaikhangam, who was also elected from Nungba constituency in Tamenglong district, said he had proposed the name of Ibobi Singh and it was seconded by senior Congress MLA Phungzathang Tonsing.
