Congress MLA from Jamshedpur West assembly constituency, Banna Gupta on Monday sat on indefinite fast in support of his long-standing demand for setting up of a electric crematorium in Sonari and uninterrupted power supply in densely populated Sonari, Kadma and its adjoining areas in Jamshedpur.
Hundreds of supporters also took part in the fast to express their solidarity with Gupta, who resorted to fast unto death agitation at triangle part in front Sonari aerodrome since this morning.
Gupta told PTI that he had no option but to resort to indefinite fast after the Tata Steel refused to issue a No Objection certificate for the purpose as the Fagu baba burning ghat falls under its command area.
A burning ghat in Sonari was a necessity as the population have been growing, he said adding that an electric crematorium in Sonari as well as adjoining areas including Kadma would certainly facilitate people to perform the last rites of their relatives.
At present, the people of these area have to carry the bodies either to Parvati ghat in Bistupur or Swarnarekha ghat in Sackhi but it was a costly affair for the poorer section of the society, he argued. As the Sonari and Kadma localities were part of his assembly segment, Gupta said it was his responsibility to fulfill the demand of the people.
Gupta have been demanding for a burning ghat with all facilities in Sonari but in vain so far. The Secretary of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC), SRA Rizvi Chabban, who was also present at the venue, said the government must initiate steps to meet the demand of the people.
Besides, Chabban said, the government should also ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in these localities.
