In yet another ‘last ditch’ attempt to halt the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), twenty school children on Thursday arrived at Chennai and submitted a memorandum at the CM’s Cell.
The children, 17 girls and 3 boys, students of Bishop Roche HSS, and four women from Idinthakarai arrived at the city during the early hours of Friday.
They were intercepted by the City Police apprehending protests. Police surveillance mounted for the ‘protestors’ was not lifted till late evening.
The Intelligence wing from Nellai had tipped off City Police here about the journey of the school children and the women accompanying them. At 4.45 am, an omni-bus with several children and the women was intercepted by the police and the bus was brought to Peerkankarani police station.
The women claimed that relatives would pick the party up at CMBT to take them on a guided tour in Chennai. With permission from police top-brass, the vehicle was allowed to continue but with two cops on board until CMBT, where they were picked up by Muhilan, a PMANE leader, in a maxi-cab.
After refreshments, the children and the women left in share autos to participate in a media briefing but the cops kept on their tail. Moments of tension prevailed when a section of them left in a rented call taxi to the Secretariat. All units were alerted and were advised to intercept the car. When intercepted at Secretariat, the occupants informed the police that they would like to present a petition to the CM’s Cell. Subsequently, they presented their petition against KKNPP.
Later, they also presented similar petitions seeking the support of Australia, Russia, and US, at the offices of the Consulate Generals of these nations.
