Srinagar: Curfew continued in Kashmir for the fourth day on Tuesday following the execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Although the situation in Srinagar is under control, violent protests had rocked many places in north and south Kashmir on Monday.
Life in the Valley has been affected due to shortage of medicines and essential commodities. 20 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed across the valley.
"Curfew is in place in the Valley for the fourth straight day. The night passed off peacefully," a police spokesman said. He said there were no reports of any fresh incident of violence or violation of curfew Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has issued four day protest calendar and called for a mass funeral prayer for Guru.
The authorities have blocked all roads leading to Sopore town, the hometown of Guru. Valley residents remained without mobile Internet services and newspapers for the fourth day while news channels remained off air on cable TV networks.
Additional forces have been deployed at vulnerable spots following clashes between protesters and law enforcing agencies. Three persons have died while over 50 others including 23 cops have been injured in the clashes since Saturday, when Guru was hanged inside Tihar Jail in Delhi.
