Kalaimani hoists Tricolour in Pudukkotai amid protection

After being prevented from doing so on Republic Day this year, a Dalit panchayat president, amid tight security, unfurled the Tricolour at a panchayat office here on Independence Day.

Kalaimani Annadurai was elected president of Karukka Kurichi panchayat, under the Karambakudi union in October last year.

Her ordeal started on Republic Day this year when a few councillors prevented her from hoisting the Tricolour at the panchayat office.

The same day, she was invited as chief guest for Republic Day functions at three panchayat union primary schools.

However, some teachers and village residents stopped her from unfurling the Tricolour there as well.

Kalaimani then lodged a police compliant stating that she was prevented from hoisting the national flag at a panchayat office.

Against this backdrop, Karambakudi Tahsildar Kalavathi, anticipating trouble during the flag hoisting ceremony on Wednesday, convened a meeting at the taluk office. During the meeting, which saw the participation of both Kalaimani and the villagers, it was decided that Kalaimani would hoist the Tricolour at the panchayat office.

On Wednesday, Kalaimani unfurled the national flag amid elaborate security arrangements put in place by Karambakudi police. Police personnel were also posted at schools in the area.
