Weddings are supposed to be a fun-filled affair full of merriment. Not just the bride and the groom but their families, friends, relatives, and other guests delve into the celebratory fervour, enjoying the occasion. Music and dance often accompany marriage ceremonies as the bride and groom sway in each other’s arms, while the invitees raise a toast to the newlyweds. But a night of merry-making transformed into a nightmare for a bride and groom at a wedding reception when they fell 25 ft through a floor of the venue where the reception was being held. Not just that, 30 other guests also fell along with the newly married couple.
According to a report by the New York Post, the bride and groom invited over 150 guests to their wedding, which took place at the historic Giaccherino monastery in Pistoia, Italy on January 13. Loud music played through the attic. The guests were having a great time partying at the wedding venue when all of a sudden a massive hole opened up in the floor presumably due to all the jumping and dancing. In a negative turn of events, about 30 of them fell through the hole, down to the ground into a pool of debris, wooden planks, and rubble. “Suddenly, I found myself in another dimension, in the dark, in the void. In a moment, I heard bodies falling on me, along with rubble of all kinds, dust, splinters,” shared the groom to a local media outlet, as cited by the New York Post.
The groom continued in his statement that he was shocked to find his friend suffering from a grievous cut on his forehead, bleeding heavily. When he called out to his wife and he did not respond, the groom thought that she might be buried inside the rubble. However, both the bride and the groom were in good health and underwent treatment at the hospital. They were discharged the following day.
Six guests suffered serious injuries, while ten were “moderately” injured, according to a report by Metro. The injured people were treated at the San Jacopo Hospital in Pistoia. The venue’s proprietors informed a local newspaper that they were unsure of the cause of the sudden collapse, calling it a “tragic and unpredictable event.” Since the police are conducting an investigation, the venue is now closed.
