New Delhi: In a pre-dawn operation on Saturday, a joint team of the Rajasthan police and the Gujarat Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) gunned down an Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
Gujarat police says that the terrorist, Sohrabuddin Qureshi alias Salim, was sent by Dawood gang members Sharif Khan and Rasool Paati to Gujarat to kill a prominent politician.
Qureshi, wanted in 11 cases across the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, was gunned down at around 0530 hrs IST on the Narol-Pirana Road.
In 2004, the Gujarat ATS booked a case against him for attempting to extort Rs 3.50 crore from the owner of Pioneer Infrastructure Pvt Limited, an Ahmedabad based builder.
The director of ATS, D G Vanjhara, says, "We had specific information. He is a LeT operative and working at the behest of Sharif Khan and Rasool Paati. He had come here to kill a prominent politician."
After the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, when the police pressure increased, Sheikh had shifted a big consignment of AK 56 rifles from Ahmedabad to Jharinya in Madhya Pradesh, which were later recovered from a well in Jharinya.
