New Delhi: The Delhi metro which is touted as one of the major achievements of the Congress in the state could end up embarrassing the government. The Metro project is under investigation after United Kingdom's Serious Fraud Office wrote a letter to the Central Bureau of investigation (CBI) flagging off possible irregularities in the awarding of a major contract to transport company Alstom.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has, however, refused to comment saying that they have no information about the issue.
The Serious Fraud Office while investigating corruption charges against Alstom - the company which bagged lucrative infrastructure contracts with the Delhi Metro - has stumbled upon details indicating the company allegedly paid bribes worth 3 million pounds to ensure the contract was swung in their favour.
As it is a letter written by the Serious Fraud Office of the UK, the allegations are being viewed with a degree of credibility. Meanwhile, the SFO has identified Indian nationals who were alleged beneficiaries of the reported bribe amount.
The SFO in its letter accessed by CNN-IBN claimed that Alstom employed a Hong Kong based company Global King Technology Ltd (GKTL) to act as consultants for Delhi Metro. The signature on the agreement with the said company was forged and no services were actually provided. Through the company, Alstom paid 3 million pounds so Indian officials could be paid off and the deal swung in favour of Alstom.
The CBI has said that it is taking the allegations seriously and will be verifying the allegations.
