CHENNAI: Among the younger generation of classical singers, some are potentially in favour of making their concert more musical, than gymnastic in nature. Two such people are the Ragam Sisters (Sriranjani and Nalinakanthi). They were trying to prove their musical skills, when they presented the concert for the Ananthaswamy Centre for Carnatic music at Dakshinamoorthy auditorium, Mylapore. Beginning with Begada varnam (Dhayanithae) of Shyama Sastri, the duo proved that they were different. This, at a time when most artistes tread only on known paths with familiar krithis.  The two  reflected next the intent of the composer, Dikshitar in Gananayakam in Raga Rudrapriya (22nd Mela of Karaharapriya).Their presentation of (Seetha Mathurya) of GNGGN Balasubramaniam in the Raga Vandhana Dharini with swara passages having a praiseworthy quality. They heightened the appreciation level of the rasikas and the Hindolam Raga Keerthana of Papanasam Sivan (Maaramana) revealed their propensity to assimilate the nuances of the lyrics of the Kriti. Realising that it is not just one aspect that makes a music concert enjoyable, the delineation of Raga Hemavathi, also known as Desi Sihmaravam – 22nd prathi madhyama Raga of Dikshitar, by Nalinakanthi revealed her desire to propitiate Goddess Kanthimathi in all her splendour. It was evident on the whole that they should render kritis, with the sole objective of augmenting the quality of the concert. Lakshmi Venkataraman (violin) made a sincere effort, Hanumanthapuram Bhoovaragan (Mridangam) and Nerkundram Sankar (Kanjira) accompanied with uncomplicated rhythmic fabric.
