HYDERABAD: If parents want their kids to be doctors, they had better groom them from a young age. This was the message of doctors to all the children and their parents at the four-day Young Doctors’ Camp held at Malakpet, Secunderabad and Somajiguda which concluded on Thursday.“We learnt about different departments such as diagnostics, in-patient wards, pharmacies, out-patient (OP) departments, diagnostic centre, operation theatre, nursing stations, etc.. Now I can check my parents’ blood pressure (BP) and understand lab reports too,” said Nihal from St Joseph’s school after the camp.Selection of the students for the camp was based on evaluation of their marks sheet and on an essay written by them on the topic “Why you want to be a part of the Young Doctors’ Camp”. This year, about 4000 entries were received out of which, 90 students were selected after an exhaustive selection process. Students who participated enthusiastically in this camp were not only from districts like Khammam, Karimnagar and Nalgonda, but were also from cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. All the students are from Class X.The camp was organised by the Yashoda Group of Hospitals. Dr A Lingaiah, director, medical services, Yashoda Hospital, said they were thinking of extending tie-ups with other hospitals and also in other states to give proper direction to students who wish to become doctors. “There is always a shortage of qualified doctors in the country and it is high time youngsters are encouraged to get into this profession,” he said. The camp also included interactive academic sessions such as group work, classroom sessions that included surgery videos and lectures from prominent doctors, and quizzes. “Even after this program, they could contact us anytime for further guidance,” said Dr Preeti Bhutta, one of the mentors for the students during the camp.A delighted parent, D Sashidhar, said, “my son is passionate about medicine and the camp gave him insight into medical practice.”
