CHENNAI: It was an alert police constable, AB Shah Nawaz, who foiled a duo’s bid to decamp with more than Rs15 lakh worth of cash and valuables stolen early on Tuesday.Shah Nawaz, a 30-year-old constable attached to Chintadripet police station, had been on patrol duty since 9 pm on Monday. He was walking near the subway on Anna Salai just after midnight, when he noticed a man carrying a box and hurrying out of Raheja Towers toward a waiting autorickshaw. “There was another man inside and both started talking in Hindi, with panic written all over their faces,” Nawaz told Express. Growing suspicious, he asked the passenger to step out and started questioning both men. On searching the box he found it contained a large number of computer parts and camera memory cards, a diamond chain, a watch and several big and small silver coins. At the bottom were bundles of cash. While he was engaged in the search, one of the men took to his heels. The constable immediately called a patrol team, who rushed to the spot and transported the thief to Chintadripet police station. The man was identified as J Prakash Kumar Prohit (23) alias Prakash of Jalore, Rajasthan and the absconding man as Bhim Singh (27), also from this state. The duo committed the heist late on Monday night and hired an autorickshaw to make their getaway to the Central railway station. Police said the recovered stolen goods consisted of `10.74 lakh in cash, a diamond chain worth `60,000, and 1,560 pen drives and memory cards making a total of `15.30 lakh.
