Jakarta: An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted southwest Maluku province in Indonesia Saturday, Xinhua reported. There were, however, neither any immediate report of damage to property or casualties and nor was a tsunami warning issued.

The temblor, which had its epicentre 163 km from Maluku and a depth of 10 km under the sea bed, struck at 6.09 p.m., according to the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

On December 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Over the next seven hours, a tsunami triggered by the quake reached out across the Indian Ocean, devastating coastal areas as far away as east Africa.

It killed at least 225,000 people across a dozen countries, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, and Thailand sustaining massive damage.
