What do you do when you are in the midst of scripting your next film? If you are Farah Khan, you make some quick money by judging a talent show.
What do you do when you are no longer the busiest composer in town…and are waiting for Farah to start work on the music of her film? If you are Anu Malik, you too make some quick money by judging a talent show.
That exactly seems to be the rationale behind Sony's Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega. Part of the channel's new line up, the show is a mix of singing, dancing, magic tricks, stand up comedy and other such variety entertainment acts. The packaging however is not in the league of a Comedy Circus or Jahak Dikhhla Jaa. The channel has done much better in the past.
A thankfully refreshing element in the show is the cap on time. Unless the judges permit an extension, the performers have to keep their act in less than one minute. The ones who are lucky to get an extension win 10,000 rupees and shall take part in a weekly grand finale.
The show is hosted by Sony's favourite in-house anchor Mona Jassi Singh. Giving her company is Shahid Kapoor's on screen friend of many films – Vishal Malhotra. Now Mona being the prettiest of the lot, one would have expected some more glamour from her. But poor Jassi has been saddled with an ill-fitting wardrobe and a dull script. Nevertheless her 1000 watt smile is among the high points of the show. Vishal tries too hard to be funny and is still stuck in the Disney hour mode.
As for the two disinterested judges…instead of complimenting each other it's a case of more of the same. Both Anu and Farah are loud, over smart and evidently just going through the motions cracking those same old sarcastic jokes. And in case the act doesn't involve singing or dancing, the two have little to respond with except for a few words of praise. This is where one really misses a Javed Akhtar or Sonali Bendre or even a Juhi Chawla to provide some novelty factor to the judging.
But to its credit this might be that one show where the performers will tower over the judges. A lot of the risky acts have a Who Dares Wins feel to them. Being the amazing country we are, there isn't a dearth of people who'll go to any extent to be on TV. One just hopes that the viewer is spared of all the sob stories of the participants. Remember, it's supposed to be entertainment!
Instead of a 10 pm slot, this show would have better off at a kiddies hour. And with India's Got Talent also going on air, it seems such talent shows are being produced only for Hindi news channels - who keep replaying these videos till the real stories happen.
