BHUBANESWAR: Monday seems to have saved shoppers and fire fighters big trouble. A fire which could have caused massive damage to the busy Unit I market was controlled within an hour. Since the busy market remains closed on Mondays, the fire fighters found it easy to take control of the situation. The flames, however, damaged property worth ` 18 lakh. At about 4.10 pm, locals reported smoke from a shop located in an alley passing by the Capital Police Station. Though the connecting road is narrow, the fire fighters could access the spot since it was a market holiday. The fire which was spotted in a plastic materials outlet-cum-godown engulfed two neighbouring shops which dealt in photo framing and puja items. “Since the two shops had inflammable items, the fire spread quickly but we could bring it under control within an hour,” Fire Officer BB Das said. Das admitted that had it been a working day, the scenario would have been different because Unit I market, being the biggest in the City, draws thousands of shoppers everyday. Besides, its passages are extremely crammed and a fire could have led to a stampede-like situation. Electric short-circuit is believed to have caused the fire. At least four fire tenders and 18 men were engaged to control the flames. No one was injured.
