Imphal: Three paramilitary troopers and two government officials were killed and another wounded when separatists ambushed a convoy carrying polling officials in Manipur on Friday.
Police said heavily armed militants attacked the vehicle, which was escorted by paramilitary troopers near village Chasat in Ukhrul district, about 80 km northeast from Imphal.
"The militants fired indiscriminately with automatic weapons killing three soldiers and two polling officials," a police official said.
A Central Reserve Police Force trooper was also injured in the attack. The team was returning after conducting polls on Thursday.
"The polling team was returning to their base on Friday morning when they were ambushed," the official said. "The voting machines were all intact." Militants later decamped with the weapons of the dead soldiers.
The first of the three-phased polling concluded on Thursday in 19 of Manipur's 60 assembly constituencies.
No rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The state is home to 19-odd rebel groups with demands ranging from secession to greater autonomy.
