FM eases I-T pangs for salaried class
Once the online Tax Information Network is in place, the salaried class may be spared from filing IT returns.

New Delhi: Salaried class might be spared from filing Income-tax returns from next year provided there was no income from any other source.

"We are considering the proposal," Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters, but added it depended upon how soon the tax department put in place the fully online Tax Information Network (TIN).

The Government has already been ordered to move towards paper-less filing of Tax Deduction at Source from 2005 but this has been put off by a year as TIN as not become fully operational.

At the moment both hard copies and soft copies are filed but the ultimate plan is to do away with Hard TDS.

The idea behind online filing of returns is to move towards paperless filing of I-T returns.

Once this is in place the salaried class would be spared from filing returns.

However at the Finance Minister was unwilling to make a commitment on a timeframe.
