In a bid to encourage self-employment, the Krishi Vigran Kendra (KVK) here set up a food processing training centre here on Friday. The programme aims at training people in value addition to avoid post-harvest losses.
The centre has been established with seed money provided by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI), KVK Principal A Ramourthi told Express. The MFPI has extended a grant of Rs 15 lakh, while KVK has contributed Rs 2.97 lakh to the centre which is located within the KVK premises.
The multi-line centre will impart training in processing of bakery items and fruit and vegetable products, said centre in-charge R Vijaylakshmi.
Free training would be given to all those who approach the centre. Rural youth and women can begin self-employment ventures by getting loans from banks or the MFPI on completion of the two-month training, Vijaylakshmi added.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy will inaugurate the centre on September 20.
