Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched Digital India at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the national capital. The event was attended by Union Ministers and industrialists including Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani.
While addressing the event, Mukesh Ambani announced, "Reliance Industries will make an investment of over Rs 250,000 crore in the digital space, including rollout of wireless broadband infrastructure and manufacturing of mobile handsets."

Most respected Prime Minister, honourable ministers on the dais, ladies and gentlemen...Launch of digital India initiative today by our Prime Minister is a momentous occasion in the history of modern India. As the world matures in the information age, digitisation is changing the way we live, learn, work and play.
Our Prime Minister's vision of digital India has the potential to fundamentally transform the lives of 1.2 billion Indians using the power of digital technology.
India is fortunate to have a Prime Minister who not only paints a comprehensive and compelling vision but has the personal leadership and drive to convert his vision to reality.
Respected Prime Minister Sir, your passion and selfless desire to improve the life of each and every citizen of our nation is an inspiration to all of us. Normally, industry moves faster than government. But with digital India it is different. I have no hesitation in saying that government has moved faster. My warm congratulations to Sh Ravi Shankar Prasad ji and his entire team.
I believe digital India will be a huge success because of the adoption of technology by the youth of India. The young people of this country have out done both industry and government. The youth of this country aspire for merit-based opportunity and want progress.
Rs 250,000 crore investment:
Digital India as we have seen empowers them to fulfill their aspirations. We at Reliance will invest over Rs 250,000 crore across the Digital India pillars.
Firstly, in terms of infrastructure, we are rolling out an all-IP next-generation, wireless broadband infrastructure across all the 29 states in India and this will be amongst the best in the world.
JIO:
Secondly, Jio is setting up a new nationwide distribution network that will enable over a 150,000 small electronic retailers to sell and service smartphones and internet devices.
Thirdly, Jio is working with leading device manufacturers encouraging them to Make in India smart phones and internet devices at an affordable price.
We will give them an assured offtake through our retail system.
We are committed to make the necessary investments and strongly partner with central and state governments in the area of e-governance, digital education, digital healthcare, smart cities and rural digital services.
Finally, we will be creating a Jio Digital India Startup Fund for entrepreneurship in cities and towns. Our intent is to provide a platform for young Indians who what to create digital businesses of the future.
I estimate that Reliance’s Digital India investments will create employment for over 5 lakh people.
It is my conviction, honourable Prime Minister, under your leadership the Digital India initiative will create a partnership among all sections of society…a partnership that will leverage the power of 1.2 billion Indians. A partnership built on the ability and industry of all our citizens. A partnership that will be an example as a developmental model for the entire world; a partnership that will build a digital society for a New India which we all proudly call Our India.
