London: Virender Sehwag's pyrotechnics against West Indies in the second cricket Test at St Lucia has prompted batting great Sunil Gavaskar to compare him with West Indian maestro Vivian Richards.
Gavaskar said Richards would be proud of some shots played by Sehwag in his strokeful innings of 180, scored off 190 balls and studded with 20 fours and two sixes.
"Sehwag played some shots that the original 'master blaster' Viv Richards would be proud to play," Gavaskar was quoted as saying in BBC Sport.
"Sehwag has the incredible knack of making up for a lack of runs in previous games by getting big tons," he added.
Sehwag narrowly missed the rare feat of scoring a century before lunch after he was stranded on 99 at the end of morning session on the opening day of the second Test in St Lucia.
Gavaskar, the first batsman to score 10,000 Test runs, said with Sehwag at the crease a sense of anxiety always prevailed on the mind of the viewers.
"When one watches him bat, there's a sense of anticipation, for the unexpected is only a ball away," he said.
