Demanding that the government provide the sale deeds for people residing in houses built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB), the State wing of the Communist Part of India (Marxist) staged a protest, headed by State secretary G Ramakrishnan near the collectorate here on Tuesday.
At a gathering of more than 1000 men and women clutching their petitions, the CPM demanded that the people who bought the houses from those who were allocated them, be given the sale deeds as they had been living there for more than 15 years. Residents from settlements at VOC Nagar, Tondiarpet and Korukkupet among others participated in the protest, after which they sent their petitions to the Slum Clearance Board office in Royapuram.
“The residents have tried obtaining their deeds for a long time now. They are the rightful owners. I urge the government to wake up and provide the sale deeds as soon as possible,” Ramakrishnan said.
Among the demands made was the waiver of interest for loans granted to build toilets at the Slum Clearance Board settlements.
“The people were given Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500 to build sanitation facilities around 30 years ago. One of the residents at Vinayagapuram received a bill of Rs 80,000 as interest for that loan recently. We strongly condemn this and demand that the amount be waived in the interest of the residents,” said R Loganathan, area committee secretary of R K Nagar to City Express.
They also demanded that people who had been living in areas without allocation by the Slum Clearance Board be given the allocation as soon as possible.
CPM North Chennai secretary T K Shanmugam and member of CPI (M) P Selva Singh also participated in the protest.
