Panaji: Goa Police on Friday arrested one of the accused in the rape case of nine-year-old Russian girl.
The accused, Anil Raghuvanshi, was arrested from a bus stop near Pernem in Goa. However, the main accused Aman Bharadwaj is still absconding.
"The two accused were employees of a pharma company in Goa. We have arrested Anil Raghuvanshi. Second accused Aman in the Russian rape case is still at large. We have an idea about Aman's whereabouts and hope to catch him soon. Anil's interrogation is on at moment. One is from Uttar Pradesh and the other is from Madhya Pradesh," Goa Police DIG Ravindra Yadav said.
Goa Police had on Thursday released pictures of the two accused.
According to Goa Police while Bharadwaj raped the nine-year-old Russian girl at Arambol beach, 35 kms from Panaji, Raghuvanshi chatted up with her mother just yards away.
Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, after being pulled up by the Centre and drawing the Russian Ambassador to India Alexander M Kadakin's ire over the rape of a nine-year-old Russian girl, has promised to personally monitor the investigation.
"Whenever any such incident has taken place government machinery has swung into action and immediately tried to nab the culprit. In fact in the last case wherein the accused were given anticipatory bail, government went and appealed to the High Court, got the appeal cancelled and ultimately arrested the accused. Goa is still a safe place for tourists. Even in this case I am personally monitoring the case," Kamat told CNN-IBN on Thursday.
Kamat's statement came on the day Goa Police released pictures of the accused.
The breakthrough for the police in identifying the accused came two days after the crime was committed on Arambol beach, 35 kms from Panaji.
The nine-year-old girl, holidaying with her mother, was raped on January 26.
