HYDERABAD: In a major property offence in the city, gold and diamonds worth Rs 2.71 crore were stolen from the office of a jewellery making unit at Domalguda on Monday.Police suspect the involvement of a small-time thief in the heist at RSR Jewellers Pvt Ltd located in the first floor of a three-storeyed building in Street No 1 in Domalguda. They faulted the owners, R Sudheer and his sister Naga Jayasree, for failing to take minimum safety measures. The thieves took away the biometric locker in which the valuables were stored. The locker cannot be opened without the fingerprints of the owners.The firm takes orders from various jewellery stores, individuals and makes ornaments. Chikkadpally police said the offenders gained entry into the office by breaking the main door lock. Apart from RSR Jewellers, there are biotech firms and offices of interior decorators in the building. Firstly, the offenders broke open into the office of the interior decorator located in the 3rd floor and stole some steel taps. Later, they broke into RSR Jewellers office and took away the locker weighing about 25 kg. “They might have tried to break open the locker but on failing to do so, they took it away,’’ police said.All the offices in the building remained closed on Sunday and the incident came to notice when an attender noticed the broken doors of the jewellery store and alerted the building owner who in turn, alerted Sudheer.“The firm has a turnover of several crores. The owners, however, failed to install CCTV cameras at the office or even employ a watchman. The entire building is guarded by a watchman but he too was on leave,’’ police said.The watchman was picked up by the police. The workers, who include some from Orissa and West Bengal, were also questioned.Clues Team officials collected finger and foot prints from the offices. Sniffer dogs went to the open space outside the building and then to a nearby road-side tea stall.
