BHUBANESWAR: Left wing ultras targeting elected representatives and government officials in Balangir district, BJP Legislature Party leader KV Singhdeo on Tuesday blamed the Government for its failure to protect the life and property of the people. “Recent incidents in my constituency have raised issues about safety and security of political leaders, including me. This clearly established that your government is unable to provide basic security to the people,” Singhdeo said in a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Singhdeo shot off a letter to the Chief Minister on the eve of the Monsoon Session of the Assembly in the wake of a threat call from Maoist leader Pratap Reddy demanding money and foodgrains and the murder of a BJP functionary at Telenpali recently. The BJP leader said he had received a phone call on July 30 from one Pratap Reddy. Claiming himself as a Maoist leader camping at Sanjabanjipali, Reddy asked for foodgrains and money with threat of dire consequence if his demand is not complied with. Singhdeo immediately brought this to the notice of the Patnagarh police. In a separate incident on August 13, Rajkishore Panda, a BJD functionary and block nominee of Balangir MP Kalikesh Singhdeo, was shot dead at Telenpali by Maoists. Sanjabanjipali and Telenpali come under Patnagarh Assembly constituency represented by Singhdeo. Many elected representatives, political leaders and Government officials received threat calls from Left wing ultras for the last one and a half years, he said. “If this is the plight of political leaders including functionaries of the BJD and Government officials, I need not say much about the plight of the common citizens in Patnagarh and in the district as a whole,” he remarked. He further drew the attention of the Chief Minster to several incidents of extortion of foodgrains and other valuables by Maoists in the district and the failure of the Government to protect the people.
