New Delhi: As millions of emotional fans worldwide queued up in front of theatres to say goodbye to their favourite boy wizard one last time, in India the cinema-going audiences looked forward eagerly to a weekend of two big releases: Harry Potter and the Death Hallows – Part II and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
'Deathly Hallows - Part 2' brings to an end an era for millions of moviegoers who grew up with the seven books and seven films with the eighth and final one in the hugely lucrative franchise opening worldwide on July 15.
Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger hit the road to search for and hopefully destroy the horcruxes that will finally bring down Voldemort, the most evil wizard of all time. It isn’t always an easy partnership. The shadow of evil sometimes threatens to destroy a six-year-old camaraderie that began in the compartment of the fire truck-red Hogwarts Express.
The road is dark and treacherous and their lives are always at peril as dark forces take over the wizarding world but for Harry Potter it ends where it all started. The place that the orphan boy wizard calls home – Hogwarts – is where the epic battle of the century takes place.
Warner Bros, the film studio behind the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, said the movie's debut in 26 countries one day earlier was 87 per cent higher than its predecessor film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and 49 per cent above 2009's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
While the two wizards and one brilliant witch try to find their way across half the world to save humanity against evil forces, three friends in ZNMD take a road trip that promises to change their lives.
If you are a 'Dil Chahta Hai' fan and consider the cult movie as your benchmark for male bonding and road bonhomie, ZNMD tries hard to match its brilliance without overselling itself. It is a fantasy film for all female moviegoers. Why? Just look at the male star cast.
Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar have packed up on muscles and their shirtless posters were harbingers of things to come. Abhay has clearly picked up some dancing skills.
From the bull rings to brilliant skyline, breathtaking drops from helicopters and sparkling waters, from the famed Tomatina festival to glittering women in colourful costumes, this movie is a postcard from Spain.
But overall, it's the fulfillment of a personal promise – to seize life, lest it passes you by. That is exactly what Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar do on their road trip in Spain. The film is directed by Zoya Akhtar and has Katrina Kaif playing the feisty Laila who lives in the moment and urges the trio to do the same.
